![]() Lefkada (Lefkas) is the smallest of the four major wine-producing Ionian islands. Despite this, with 1700 hextares under cultivation, it is second in vineyard area only to Kerkyra. Plantings on Lefkada mirror little of the varietal diversity of its neighboring islands, consisting almost exclusively of the Venetian transplant Vertzami (Ital. Marzemino). Vertzami is late-ripening, extremely high in anthocyanins and prefers lower elevations (below 500 meters) where it can ripen sufficiently to produce wines of deep extract and full body. Above that elevation, cold winds in September from the mountainous mainland just to the east contribute to an unbecoming weakness in color, body and fruit. The local cooperative is the sole producer of bottled wine on the Island. |
