![]() Viticulture area: approx. 1500-2000 Hectares Wine production: approx. 50,000 hectoliters Greece's northeastern-most region has not developed a bottled wine industry and as such has no appellation designations. Although the Dionysian cult is believed to have originated in Thraki, in more recent times, with substantial sources just north in what is now Bulgaria, and south on the island of Thassos, the region had little need to produce wine of its own. In addition, the area has been home to a large Moslem population since Otttoman times. Vineyards, such as there are, are mostly for local production, although there are is some vineyard area utilizrd by bottled wine producers from the west in Makedonía. Cultivars in used in local production reflect the proximity of the region to Bulgaria. The white Zoumiatiko is the Bulgarian Dimiat, the red Mavroudi Thrakis is assumed to be a clone of the Bulgarian Mavrud and the red Pamidi (likely of classical origin) has the Bulgarian synonym, Pamid. Tsantalis revived 50 hectares of vineyard in Maronia in 1992, planting Roditis, Zoumiatis, Moschato Alexandrías, Limnio Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Grenache, Cabernet, Syrah and Merlot. These vineyards are employed in the production of Tsantalis' new breed of varietal wines. After harvesting, the grapes are hurried to their large facility in Ayios Pavlos for processing. |
