Athenee Importers is America's largest
and longest-running firm devoted to importing and distributing Greek wines in America.
The company was begun by Tony and Giota Englisis in 1975. Following Tony's unfortunate
death in 1999, Andrea, the couple's daughter, stepped in to co-manage the family
business. In addition to its distinction as an important Greek wine importer, Athenee
is also now the only wine importing company in America we know of that is owned and
managed by two women, mother and daughter at that.
Athenee represents producers who are at the forefront of the Greek wine revolution,
including Estate Hatzimichalis, the first quality winery in Greece to move away from
the pack in the 1980s.
Athenee's producers represent most of Greece's key winemaking regions: From Nemea;
Domaine John Kaltsis and GAI'A, from Mantinia; Domaine Spiropoulos, from the western
Peloponessos; Chateau Mercouri, from Attika Chateau Harlaftis and Domaine Vassiliou,
from Makedonia; Drama's Pavlidis and Halkidiki's Porto Carras, from Crete; the Sitia
Cooperative, from Santorini; Antoniou, from Samos; the Samos Cooperative and from
Kefalonia; Estate Metaxas.
Although the small annual production of some of these wineries puts limitations on
their geographic distribution, Athenee's portfolio is nevertheless distributed by
38 companies in 24 states.
The company also represents the KEO wines from Cypress, including the well-known
St. John Commandaria. Rounding out the portfolio of products are Athenian Beer, Marathon
and Ioli waters and ouzos from Samos (Giokarinis), Mytilini (Cooperative), Piraeus
(Thomopoulos) and Thraki (Thraki, S.A.).
As Greek wine seems poised for increased exposure in America, Andrea continues to
insure they stay in the public eye. Athenee is a frequent contributor of wines to
community, charity and trade events. For Andrea, doing her part to make sure consumers
understand the strides Greek wine have made is part and parcel of the philosophy
that makes Athenee a leader in the industry. |
