Vintage Report: Emery Wines &
Spirits
The following received today from Mary-Irene Triantafyllou of Emery:
Harvest was premature
and completed within seven days in the year 2001. The grapes for our white wines
were harvested from the 21st of August to the 4th of September and for our reds from
the 6th to the 16th of September, in the early morning hours from 6am until 10am.
During harvest-time the temperature ranged from 230 to 250C, and the weather was
mild.
The microclimate of the region during 2000-2001 was characterized by a cold winter
and warm summer. The all year-round sun, the high and regular rainfalls, and the
cool sea breezes from May to September favored the Rhodian vineyards. The rainy days
were approximately 55 and were bellow the average (70 days annually) and the average
temperature was 190C. Rhodes enjoys the longest season of summery weather in Greece.
It is important to note that the location of the winery enable us to limit the time
between picking and crushing to a minimum. All the grapes are picked carefully by
hand.
Quantities produced for our our red wines were substantially smaller than other years.
The quality however was one of the best of the last decade. This was due to the ideal
weather conditions as well as the decrease of rainy days. For our whites, acidity
was medium 5gr/lt and the Alcoholic Volume was 12%. For our reds, acidity was 6 gr/lt
and the Alcoholic Volume was 12.5%
In contrast to other parts of Greece we did not face problems with quality. |
