Greek wine industry news:
Dec. 15, 2002 Vintage Report 2002-Gerovassiliou.

We received this vintage news from Thrasivoulos Giantsidis of
Ktima Gerovassiliou.

"This year was notable for the huge percentage of rain our area experienced; 1,000 mm--twice the usual amount. Because of the nature of our soil in Epanomi, the rain helped restore our vines following two consecutive dry years.

The quality of white grapes was excellent this year, though some of the late-ripening varieties required careful selection. Sauvignon Blanc was harvested around 8/18, Chardonnay followed on 8/21, Viognier and Malagouzia on 8/22 and finally Asyrtiko on 8/28.

Cool nights resulting from the rains kept the maturation of red varieties within the ideal time range. Our 2002 reds will have color and body in high degree. Merlot was harvested around 9/3, Syrah around 9/5 and Grenache came in on around 9/8."
