Greek wine industry news:
Dec. 15, 2002 Vintage Report 2002-Flerianou

We recently spoke to Yiannis Flerianos of Flerianou vineyards. Following the unexpected death of his father earlier this year, Yiannis, a UC Davis-trained oenologist, left his position at Hatzimichali to work with his mother Mary Flerianou. In addition to the heading the family-owned vineyards and label, Mary is herself a highly respected consulting oenologist. The pair is working hard to establish their wines in Greece and abroad. Our profile of this mother-son team will appear soon. In the meantime, a digest of my conversation with Yiannis:

The vineyards escaped destruction during the hard rains of the harvest season. Unlike some other Peloponesian producers, they were able to select their harvest bunch by bunch. Although this year did not produce a bumper crop (or perhaps because it did not), the raw grape quality was very good. In the past they have purchased from other growers. Because their growers took a severe hit, quantities will be limited, but quality will be high.

Learn more about Yiannis and Mary when our profile is released, probably later this month.
