Pierre Rovani Reviews Gerovassiliou, Karyda
and Voyatzi
In the May 2002 issue of the Wine Advocate, Pierre Rovani reviewed several Greek wines. Included
in the review were Gerovassiliou's Estate White (Malagouzia/Asyrtiko)
and Syrah G. He found red currant and tangerine flavors in the Malagouzia, declaring
it a "an excellent value." Regarding the Syrah, Rovani said, "its
character reveals excellent depth to its cassis liquer, chocolate, blackberry, and
asphalt-flavored personality."
Karyda's Naousa received high praise. According to Rovani, "even though
Xinomavro is typically rustic, Karyda has been able to harness its fruit without
extracting any of its hard, tannic characteristics." He believes it to be "neither
complex nor long on the finish but delivers loads of bang for the buck."
Voyatzi's Estate Red was described
as "broad, powerful and complex," bursting with "chocolate, spices,
dark fruits, black olives, and freshly laid road tar." [road tar, in Parkers
lexicon, should not be seen as a bad thing]
All the wines mentioned received respectable ratings and a much-needed boost to PR.
Sotiris Bafitis is undoubtedly responsible for putting the wines in Rovani's crosshairs. |
