Dan Marshall has
been involved in the wine trade since moving to London in 1992 to study at the Wine
and Spirit Education Trust, a British trade organization dedicated to wine education.
He completed both their "Certificate" and "Higher Certificate"
courses in 1993 and also attended "L'Acadamie Du Vin" at Christie's in
London, which was conducted by the Masters of Wine. He continued traveling throughout mainland Europe for several months taking additional programs in many of the wine regions. Upon returning to the United States he worked for two years in a fine wine & upscale gourmet grocery. He then took the position of a wine steward at the Portobello Yacht Club in Walt Disney World, Florida. In 1994 he accepted the position of regional manager in Oregon & Washington for an Italian wine import company and then transferred to Northern California to do the same. In March of 2002 he opened Du Vin Fine Wines in Alameda, two miles east of San Francisco, rapidly establishing himself as the community's premier fine wine merchant. Against the advice of naysayers who believed that a predominantly foreign focus would be commercial suicide for a retailer close by the heart of America's leading wine producing region, Dan specialized in wines from France, Italy, and Spain with about twenty-five percent of the wines from the United States. His instincts proved correct. From the beginning the store stood out as source of otherwise overlooked niche products that appealed to adventurous and well-informed buyers. In fact, Dan has built a clientele that prefer his store precisely because it is a place to go to become informed. The store features 600 selections and includes wines from more than 20 countries. According to Dan, the decision to create a section consisting of serious Greek wine was easy. "Greek wine fits right into my concept. The Greek products I sell are unique but of obvious quality. It helps that I have spent time learning about the wines and am the only salesperson in my store, but the fact is that market for Greek wines is stronger than most people realize." Collaborating with Elias Karkabasis of Old Country Importers, Dan has contributed enthusiastically to an increase in awareness about Greek wines in and around San Francisco. Cosponsoring a highly successful wine dinner featuring Kir-Yianni's Mihalis Boutaris at San Francisco's Mezes Restaurant in May, 2002 was just one of the ways in which Dan has demonstrated his commitment. Du Vin Fine Wines is obviously a great resource for fans of Greek wine in the San Francisco/Berkeley area, but can ship to 12 other states as well. They are: California Colorado Hawaii Idaho Iowa Illinois Minnesota Missouri New Mexico Oregon Washington Wisconsin Dan emphasizes that shipping costs vary from destination to destination.
